Hawai'i County voters are concerned about the loss and deterioration of local lands and want to dedicate a portion of their existing tax dollars to pay for protection, according to a new poll. The telephone survey, released Friday by the Hawai'i office of the non-profit land conservation organization Trust for Public Land (TPL), revealed that an overwhelming 70 percent of Big Island voters want to see mandated County spending on land and water protection.

The US Army today entered into a cooperative agreement with The Trust for Public Land (TPL) to help protect as open space the 1,129-acre P?p?kea-Paumal? property adjacent to the Army's Kahuku Training Area. The agreement calls for the Army to provide funding for an effort by TPL, the North Shore Community Land Trust, the State of Hawai`i and Honolulu County to purchase and protect the parcel that dominates large bluffs along the North Shore.

In yesterday's elections, voters in Maui and Kaua'i Counties passed charter amendments mandating that a portion of property tax revenues be placed in special funds for the protection of open space, natural and cultural resources and public access to lands. These are the first local open space funding measures passed in Hawai'i.

Locals and visitors alike have enjoyed this beach on the north shore of Kaua`i, made famous in the 1957 classic film, South Pacific. TPL purchased the 40-acre beach property from the long-time private owners and transferred it to the state to be managed as a public resource.

TPL announced its plans to purchase 37 acres on the north shore of Kaua`i, protecting one of Hawai`i's most beautiful beaches. TPL hopes to convey the beach and uplands to the state of Hawai`i by the end of December, 2000.
