Results from a new public opinion poll commissioned by the Trust for Public Land (TPL), a national land conservation nonprofit, indicate that Indian River County voters would strongly support a $50 million bond and 1/2 mill property tax increase on the ballot this fall to acquire and preserve environmentally significant lands, cultural heritage landscapes, and agricultural lands for the protection of water resources, open spaces, and wildlife habitat. In the TPL poll, voters were asked whether they would support a $50 million bond issue for land and water conservation. By a 2 to 1 margin (56 percent to 25 percent), they said they would vote for the bond.

TPL a national nonprofit land conservation organization, today announced that it has conveyed 8.5 acres to the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, the only location in the United States where Christopher Columbus landed during any of his voyages to the New World. The property is situated on a hill overlooking the park and the Caribbean Sea. It includes a two-story 5,800-square foot house that will become a visitor center and museum. Governor Jeb Bush and the Florida Cabinet today secured the future of Cypress Gardens as a Florida attraction, nine months after the state's oldest theme park closed its doors because of dwindling attendance.
