The Town of Queen Creek has purchased a 4.75-acre parcel of land that is a key component of the planned Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre. The Trust for Public Land transferred ownership to the Town on April 13. The $404,000 purchase will be financed with park development fees.

The Trust for Public Land, a national non-profit land conservation organization with an Arizona office in Phoenix, transferred ownership of a large parcel of land to the Town of Queen Creek on Friday. The 78.28-acre property will become the town's most centrally located park and is anticipated to see heavy use by the community.

The USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service awarded a $1.75 million grant towards the purchase of an easement on this 300-acre farm in Dewey, Arizona. The farm is a popular education venue for local school children and hosts several public festivals. Private donations are needed to complete purchase of the easement.

Constructed as a hotel in 1929, city-owned Tovrea Castle--known locally as "the wedding cake"-- is surrounded by more than 500 stately saguaros and other desert vegetation. TPL helped the city acquire approximately 4 acres to prevent development from encroaching on the historic property.

The protected parcels total 57 acres and include streams, canyons, granite formations and a prominent ridgetop viewable from every vantage point in downtown Prescott. Threatened with imminent development, the three properties were the city's first open space acquisitions using funds from a 1 percent sales tax extension, passed with TPL's help in May 2000.

These acquisitions in Sedona's famous Red Rocks area include 25 acres near the archeologically significant Honanki cliff dwellings and the last private inholding in Lincoln Canyon--critical peregrine falcon habitat.
