Planning Urban Heat Island Mitigation in Boston

The Trust for Public Land’s Climate-Smart Cities™ program helps cities nationwide conserve land and create parks and green infrastructure to meet the climate challenge. One challenge for urban communities is the risks associated with an exaggerated urban heat island. Coordinated with our work in Boston, The Trust for Public Land engaged graduate Urban and Environmental Planning students at Tufts University to study the urban heat island in Boston. This report outlines Boston’s urban heat island impacts, green infrastructure mitigation strategies, the results of a vulnerability analysis, and provides locally-specific recommendations for mitigation.
