Kids spend an average of 8 hours a day in front of screens, and only 4-7 minutes a day outdoors. Our culture's increasing alienation from the natural world is taking a toll on our children. Over and over, studies show that kids who play outside are healthier, happier, and more attentive. The Trust for Public Land teamed up with The Outdoor Foundation, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, West Atlanta Watershed Alliance, Greening Youth Foundation, Chattahoochee Nature Center, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and others to create Thrive Outside Atlanta, a program that gets kids outdoors.

We work with afterschool programs, summer camps and other groups that serve kids from low-income communities around Atlanta to take young people on fun adventures both close-to-home in their neighborhood parks and to a state or national park along the Chattahoochee River. Kids experience hiking, birding, mountain biking, kayaking, and rock climbing – and get a taste for the joyful experiences that the outdoors has to offer. These moments in nature will jumpstart a love for the outdoors that will last a lifetime.
