The small town of Milan in Coos County is part of New Hampshire’s “Great North Woods,” a region historically tied to forest products and outdoor tourism. The Trust for Public Land worked in partnership with the town and the Northern Forest Center to acquire four new properties to join three lots already owned by the Town to create a 1,393 acre community forest. Through three separate transactions in 2016 and 2017 the municipal lands were permanently protected with a conservation easement. The property is open to hiking, hunting and fishing with a trailhead at the end of French Hill Road. The property contains important wildlife habitat for a variety of species including moose, black bear and wetland species that exist along the Androscoggin River. The property will also be a source of revenue from sustainable timber harvesting. Children from the Milan Village School are cutting trails on the property and using the land for outdoor education.
