Upper Gros Ventre River Ranch

East of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, lies the Gros Ventre Wilderness, a generous expanse of wildland, wildlife, and beauty that draws visitors from around the world. The Upper Gros Ventre River Ranch, just north of this wilderness area, is an essential corridor for roaming wildlife within the region’s natural system.

Former Wisconsin U.S. Senator Herb Kohl owned this stunning ranch for many years. Conservationists deemed this area a high priority for protection due to its precious natural elements. It contains over 2.5 miles of frontage along the federally designated Wild and Scenic Gros Ventre River and six headwater tributary streams.

The Upper Gros Ventre River Ranch maintains a critical connection for wildlife within the region’s natural system due to its proximity to the National Elk Refuge, the Wind River Range, and Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.

Thankfully, Senator Kohl understood the value of the land. As a founding member of the Jackson Hole Land Trust, he created a conservation easement on his property in 1983 that restricted development on a portion of the land.

In December 2014, Kohl generously donated the 990-acre ranch to Trust for Public Land, with the help of various partners. Immediate results included removing fencing dangerous for both migrating animals and nature enthusiasts. TPL and partners completed extensive restoration work, such as reconnecting four tributaries to the headwaters of the Gros Ventre River, linking over 15 miles of streams to the Gros Ventre River, and restoring riparian habitat. Revitalized tributaries provide over 5 miles of invaluable trout habitat to protect the resident, native, and Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat trout population.

Kohl said that he fell in love with the area’s natural beauty in the early 1970s. “Its preservation and protection have been part of my blueprint as owner,” he said, adding, “Trust for Public Land is a national leader in the American conservation movement and the perfect partner to carry out the goal of preserving this area.” TPL conveyed the property to Bridger-Teton National Forest, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy access to fishing, horseback riding, camping, and other outdoor pursuits.

If not for Herb Kohl, one of Wyoming’s most precious landscapes might be in danger of development today. “Herb Kohl is to be commended for his generosity and, even more so, for his vision that began decades ago with an investment in some of the most beautiful land in the country. That investment has fortified the land he now turns over to us as its steward.
