MA’O Organic Farm Palikea Expansion

MA'O Organic Farm is located along the Wai'anae Coast on O'ahu in one of Hawai'i's poorest and most under-served communities. Substance abuse, homelessness, and crime are serious problems, as are preventable, diet-related diseases such as diabetes. Against this backdrop, MA'O takes in college-age youth, many from challenged backgrounds, and employs them as interns. MA'O teaches interns how to farm organically, teaches the farming business and its marketing and regulatory angles, pays them a stipend, and pays for their college tuition. This 21-acre acquisition will add to the 11 acres MA'O currently farms, increasing its organic food production capacity by 75 percent, adding 12,000 pounds of organic fruits and vegetables monthly to local food supplies. It will also increase MA'O's ability to expand its youth leadership and empowerment programs to serve more young leaders of the future.
