These 80 acres in Hollis, Maine, got their name from the deep, bedrock walls along the Saco River—cool enough in summer for Indians to store their food. When a developer proposed subdividing this pristine, one-mile stretch along the river into a dozen high-priced house lots, residents of Hollis banded together with The Trust for Public Land’s help to find a conservation solution. In 2007, TPL negotiated an agreement to hold the property off the market until funds could be raised for its protection as town conservation land. The nearly $1 million project was funded by the town, the Land for Maine’s Future program, and private donors.
