Statement from Trust for Public Land on the Passing of Representative Raúl Grijalva

Phoenix, AZ — Statement from Jim Petterson, TPL’s Vice President Mountain West Region, Colorado & Southwest Region Director, on the passing of former Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee and Congressman Raul Grijalva of Arizona:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Representative Raúl Grijalva, a longtime champion of the outdoors. For more than two decades, Rep. Grijalva served as the voice for Southern Arizonans in Washington, D.C. Guided by his deep commitment to community values and his love for the outdoors, he worked tirelessly to protect Arizona’s landscapes and advance conservation efforts nationwide.

As Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee, Rep. Grijalva was a steadfast advocate for public parks, stronger protections for public lands, and environmental improvements benefiting communities from Tucson to Nogales and beyond. His leadership helped secure permanent protections for the Grand Canyon and bolster Saguaro National Park, ensure lasting funding for land and water conservation programs, and strengthen partnerships with Arizona’s tribal communities to expand access and investment.

His legacy of service and dedication to conservation and community will be felt for generations to come. While his leadership will be missed in Congress, his impact on Arizona and the American Southwest will endure.”
