Senior Planned Giving Advisor - Location Flexible

Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Director of Planned Giving, the Senior Planned Giving Advisor proactively manages a planned giving portfolio of 100-120 major gift prospects as well as collaborating with the Sr. Director on developing and conducting periodic planned giving training for Philanthropy staff.
The Sr. Advisor is responsible for developing and implementing effective planned giving strategies for donors and prospects through bequests, beneficiary designations, and life income vehicles.
Utilizing a team approach, they will serve as a technical planned giving advisor and expert partner to field philanthropy, state and program leadership and project managers when working with prospects and their professional advisors in order to generate new planned gifts. The Sr. Advisor serves as a convener and strategist in ensuring we achieve the donor’s philanthropic objectives as well as securing the best and highest gift in support of the current and future financial needs of the organization.
This position is hybrid in nature and candidates can be based within commutable distance from our Trust for Public Land offices in any of the following cities: Denver, St. Paul, Dallas, Seattle, or San Francisco area.

Portfolio (80%)
  • Identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards planned gifts from a portfolio of current and prospective legacy donors with a primary focus on bequest and life income donors located in TPL’s major markets.
  • Accomplishes this work with a donor centered and collaborative approach, geared towards strengthening and maintaining positive relationship between individuals and Trust for Public Land as a whole
  • Works collaboratively with field philanthropy in providing planned giving technical support , strategy, coaching, and assistance with cultivating, structuring and closing new planned gifts, utilizing a team approach, from donors who are in other relationship manager portfolios
  • Manages a portfolio of approximately  100-120 individuals in the defined geographic region and is responsible for securing, planning, and engaging in 70-90 face to face visits annually (including virtual visits)
  • Independently responds to donor and TPL staff inquiries with appropriate information on planned giving tailored to an individual's specific needs
  • Creates compelling, well written correspondence and donor proposals and utilizes relevant software to generate gift illustrations and contracts
  • Discusses assets proficiently and listens for opportunities for gifts of assets
  • Utilizes software and systems to track key metrics, prioritize activities and analyze portfolio  status
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with Trust for Public Land donors and staff at all levels
  • Keeps abreast of changes and emerging issues in planned giving

Education and Training (20%)
  • In collaboration with the Sr. Director of Planned Giving, the Sr. Advisor develops an annual training schedule for staff and volunteers.
  • Trainings include, but are not limited to:
    • presentations on planned giving to Advisory Boards
    • orienting new TPL staff
    • webinars
    • lunch & learn brown bags utilizing case studies and role playing in order to familiarize philanthropy staff with basic planned giving concepts and develop a comfort level with broaching the topic of legacy giving with donors and prospects
  • Schedules, manages and implements the overall planned giving training module
  • Develops planned giving training content, case studies, talking points, and role playing scenarios for ongoing training and development of Philanthropy staff and new hires
  • Presents planned giving material to Advisory Boards
  • Updates educational content on the planned giving website and on Canopy, the TPL intranet
  • Conducts periodic surveys of training participants to measure effectiveness and improve content and techniques based on feedback and implement course corrections, or new opportunities, as necessary

  • Commitment to the mission of The Trust for Public Land
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in planned giving or transferrable experience working directly with clients in a related field such as financial services, wealth management, or estate planning
  • Demonstrated knowledge of planned giving vehicles and basic estate and financial planning, including the tax implications of charitable giving. Ability to apply this knowledge to address individual donor needs and goals
  • Ability to communicate effectively and with enthusiasm to a varied constituent base
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to perform successfully and thrive within a geographically remote reporting structure
  • Ability to create, tailor, and present training materials and approaches that support various learning styles
  • Exceptional planning, organization, time management, analytical, and multi-tasking skills
  • Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills
  • Capacity to work easily and effectively with a wide range of people; adept at building relationships.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and with one or more CRM tracking systems
  • High attention to detail is a must
  • Willingness and ability to travel to meet with donors, visit various TPL field offices and projects, attend events, staff meetings, and retreats, as needed

We offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience; the range for this position is $110,000-120,000 annually.
