Pennsylvania Director of Philanthropy
The Pennsylvania Director of Philanthropy (DOP) will design and lead all fundraising activities to support TPL’s activities throughout the state and other geographies including Camden, NJ and the Chesapeake Bay area. The Director will work closely with the Pennsylvania State Director and members of the program and philanthropy team to lead a comprehensive fundraising program that maximizes support for the organization and its activities state wide.
The DOP should be an entrepreneurial and results-oriented individual who is self-motivated, committed to working at the highest level of quality, able to work both independently and in collaboration, manage multiple priorities, and thrive within a fast-paced, results-oriented office. The DOP must be adept in working with philanthropy and programmatic leadership throughout the organization, especially working closely with the Pennsylvania State Director, program and philanthropy staff to identify gift opportunities, create donor strategies, and close gifts.
The DOP will help the team leverage national resources to elevate TPL at the local level as well as promote and advocate work taking place in the field within its national programs. The Director will carry a portfolio with an emphasis on individual major gift prospects and donors. This position reports to the East Region Director of Philanthropy.
The Pennsylvania Director of Philanthropy will:
- Oversee and be accountable for all fundraising activities including design and implementation of annual and long-range plans, development and realization of annual revenue goals, setting the priorities and focus to build and develop a strong philanthropy program that supports our Parks, Schoolyards, Trails and Land Protection projects throughout the state, Camden, NJ and the Chesapeake Bay area.
- Work with organizational and regional resources and team members to identify, qualify and track new prospective donors. Those teams may include Planned Giving, Prospect Research, Conservation Champions, and other Directors of Philanthropy. Manage outreach both internal and external, to advance connections with prospects and cultivate those prospects using researched strategies and methods.
- Work with the State Director to identify operating and capital needs in order to integrate and direct fundraising efforts especially in Philadelphia, and Camden N.J as well as new markets including Scranton, Pittsburgh, Lancaster and Chesapeake Bay area. Track and report progress toward revenue and programmatic goals. Monitor philanthropy associated expenses ensuring proper investment of resources. Oversee donor communications and recognition, coordinating with regional and national marketing departments. Has oversight of donor events and tours. Direct and coordinate the involvement of State Director and program staff with donors and in overall fundraising.
- Partner with the State Director to identify, recruit and on-board a Pennsylvania Advisory Board made up of philanthropic, community and civic leaders who will serve as ambassadors to TPL’s mission and provide philanthropic support.
The Pennsylvania Director of Philanthropy will:
- Build and develop a robust Major Gifts program that supports TPL’s work in Pennsylvania, Camden NJ and Chesapeake Bay area and to ensure growth and expansion.
- Grow and develop a balanced portfolio of 100 prospects with the capacity to make 5-figure+ gifts and effectively move them thru the four stages (qualification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship).
- Make at least 100 visits (aspire to 120 visits) with donors and prospects, annually;
- Create comprehensive engagement strategies, lead cultivation teams, and lead in the creation and delivery of final solicitation and stewardship materials and activity; and
- Promote blended gifts, planned giving, and involve peer volunteers, leadership, senior management, and project staff in cultivation as needed.
- Model TPL’s shared values (Belonging, Creativity, Collaboration, Impact, and Hope) to effectively work across the organization.
- Minimum of six+ years of fundraising experience, including making major gift solicitations of $100K and above
- Knowledge of and experience with Pennsylvania’s philanthropic communities especially in Philadelphia;
- Creative thinking and entrepreneurial acumen and a desire and ability to build a strong local philanthropy program using the breadth of resources TPL offers as a national organization.
- Experience with recruiting and liaising with volunteer boards, as well as working with volunteers to drive greater engagement and successful fundraising;
- Management experience and an ability to function effectively as a member of a team, ensuring close coordination and integration with other staff members;
- Self-motivation with an ability to work effectively and autonomously; able to multi-task with exceptional organizational and planning skills and excellent attention to detail and deadlines;
- Excellent written communication and editing skills (including grant writing), and interpersonal skills ranging from one-on-one interactions to formal group presentations;
- Ability to thrive in a small, dynamic, busy office;
- Proficiency with databases or donor management software.
- Awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations;
- Understands Trust for Public Land’s gift acceptance policies and ensures ethical compliance with fundraising best practices, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals. High integrity and commitment to personal and professional excellence.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Willingness to work flexible hours and available for donor related travel mostly within the state and surrounding areas and some national.
As a full-time exempt employee, you will be eligible for The Trust for Public Land’s comprehensive benefits program which includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, three weeks of vacation annually plus ten holidays, and a 403(b) retirement plan, currently with an up to 5.5% company match. We offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience; the range for this position is $100,000-115,000 annually.
