Position Summary:
The Texas Director of Philanthropy (DoP) is responsible for the design, coordination and implementation of all fundraising activities to support The Trust for Public Land’s activities in Texas. The Director of Philanthropy works closely with the Texas State Director to develop a comprehensive fundraising program that maximizes support for the organization and its activities across the state. The DoP helps the team leverage national resources to elevate The Trust for Public Land at the local level as well as promote and advocate work taking place in the field with our national programs. The position carries a portfolio with an emphasis on individual major gift prospects and donors. In partnership with the State Director, the DoP helps recruit and manage advisory board members and directs their fundraising efforts.
The Texas Director of Philanthropy reports to the Colorado Southwest Director of Philanthropy.

40%      Program and Advisory Board Oversight: Oversees and accountable for all fundraising activities in the state program, including the design and implementation of annual and long-range plans and priorities, setting and realization of annual revenue goals, and development of donor-centric marketing materials. Works with State Director and other program staff to identify operating and capital needs in order to integrate and direct fundraising efforts, including philanthropic campaigns. Tracks and reports progress toward revenue and programmatic goals and shares responsibility with the State Director for meeting or exceeding the annual philanthropy budget. Monitors philanthropy associated expenses ensuring proper investment of resources. Oversees donor communications and recognition, coordinating with regional and national marketing departments.  Leads and implements strategic donor events and tours. Directs and coordinates the involvement of leadership and program staff with donors and in overall fundraising.  Collaborates with Legal, Finance, Marketing, and other Philanthropy staff as necessary.
Works with the State Director and Advisory Board Chair to develop and sustain an Advisory Board structure that supports local and regional priorities, including identifying and recruiting new members, directing the fundraising knowledge and efforts of the Advisory Board, and overseeing the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual board members and ensuring giving metrics are achieved.
60%   Relationship Manager: Manages a portfolio of approximately 100 donors and prospects with an emphasis on individual major gift donors and prospects, including: donor identification, strategy development, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Conducts donor visits regularly and often to achieve at least 100 visits annually. Creates comprehensive engagement strategies, leads cultivation teams, and leads in the creation and delivery of final solicitation and stewardship materials and activity. Promotes blended gifts, planned giving, and involves peer volunteers, leadership, senior management, and project staff in cultivation as needed. Works with Philanthropy Coordinator to ensure donor records are updated.
The Director of Philanthropy is expected to:
  • Carry a balanced portfolio of 100 prospects with the capacity to make 5-figure+ gifts and effectively move them thru the four stages (qualification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship).
  • Make at least 100 visits (aspire to 120 visits) with donors and prospects, annually
  • Contribute to Philanthropy’s overall success by assuring budget and goals are met or exceeded. 
  • Develop and implement annual and long-range State Philanthropy strategic plan
 Experience, Education and Skills Required:
  • Minimum six+ years of fundraising experience, including demonstrated experience in major gift solicitations of $50K and up and campaign management.
  • Demonstrated experience recruiting and managing volunteer boards and/or campaign committees, as well as working with volunteers in fundraising.
  • Knowledge, experience and contacts in the Texas philanthropic communities, especially the greater Dallas/Ft. Worth area.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as a member of a team, ensuring close coordination and integration with other staff members.
  • Self-motivated with a proven ability to work autonomously; able to multi-task with exceptional organizational and planning skills and excellent attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Excellent written communication skills (including grant writing) and interpersonal skills ranging from one-on-one interactions to formal group presentations.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and able to thrive in a small, dynamic, busy office.
  • Computer proficiency with various Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and with complex databases or donor management software a plus.
  • Understands The Trust for Public Land’s gift acceptance policies and ensures ethical compliance with fundraising best practices, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.
  • Strong interest in and commitment to urban parks and land conservation and commitment to The Trust for Public Land’s mission.
  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Proficiency in Spanish preferred
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and available for donor related travel (avg of 30%) mostly within the region and some national.
