Senior Writer and Researcher - multiple locations

The Senior Writer and Researcher is a master storyteller who plays a key role within the Marketing and Communications Department by working with staff across the organization to draw out data-based insights that demonstrate the value of parks and open spaces as critical solutions to address climate, health, and equity challenges. This position will collaborate across the organization to identify and integrate data-driven proof points into communications that elevate The Trust for Public Land’s thought leadership and deepen audience engagement with our organization and mission.
 
The ideal candidate is an experienced data journalist with with a background in science, health, and/or environmental reporting who brings exceptional research, writing, editing, and interviewing skills and thrives in a deadline-driven environment. Reporting to the Senior Director of Communications, this role will consult with senior leadership and departments across our distributed organization to develop content and communications — reports, white papers, infographics, scripts, speeches, presentations, positioning statements, and more. We are seeking a determined and energetic self-starter who excels at translating complex information into actionable insights for communications and understands the nuances of engaging varied audiences from donors to policymakers to affinity groups.
 
Primary Responsibilities
  • Takes initiative and conducts ongoing interviews with internal and external stakeholders, leveraging in-house resources to identify and develop messaging and communications opportunities. Crafts pitches and collaborates with marketing and communications team to maintain portfolio of ongoing assignments. 
  • Researches, writes, and edits communications that elevate The Trust for Public Land as a thought leader. Produces bylines, white papers, talking points, reports, and other strategic communications on assignment, managing multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Possesses an exceptional degree of judgment, diplomacy, commitment to confidentiality, and responsible decision-making. Represents the organization in meetings, events, and committees 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required with minimum 10 years of related experience. Direct experience in speechwriting, journalism, or political writing highly preferred. Proficient in Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Experience in conservation, urban planning, health, environmental justice, and/or politics preferred.
  • Deeply curious with a drive to bring forward insights and a demonstrated passion for our mission to create parks and protect land for people.
