Project Manager - Parks for People

The Project Manager will be responsible for the full range of activities associated with park and green alley development projects within the Parks for People—Los Angeles Program from negotiating land acquisition transactions to managing the design and construction of new parks. The Project Manager will facilitate community workshops, prepare conceptual plans, manage consultants, steward construction document preparation and construction administration.   This position will be a key member of the Parks for People – Los Angeles team working to restore, construct and maintain capital improvements for green alley, park, garden and playground development projects throughout Los Angeles County.
Manage a range of existing and new park and playground projects in close coordination with the Parks for People –Los Angeles Program team. This management of projects includes:
  • Site selection and evaluation for new parks, playgrounds and Fitness Zones;
  • Due diligence for new park projects;
  • Conceptual design development;
  • Vendor selection and management (including contracting of landscape designers and construction professionals);
  • Selection and purchase of play and outdoor fitness equipment and other amenities;
  • Community engagement;
  • Management of relationships and negotiation of contracts with city and other local agencies and vendors;
  • Design and planning coordination with city agencies and community groups
  • Oversight of project construction process
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with partner organizations and other community-based organizations. Assist them with their community support strategies.     
  • Assist program staff in identifying new projects and partnership opportunities.
  • Administrative tasks will include adherence to contractual project obligations, including associated reporting requirements and general program support.
  • A degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited university; licensure a plus
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience that includes project management in urban community park planning and construction, ideally in Los Angeles
  • Excellent oral, written and graphic communication skills
  • Experience in hiring and managing contractors to design and construct urban park improvements
  • Experience working for or with community based organizations and public agencies
  • Ability to manage complex projects from start to finish with moderate level of supervision
  • Must have the ability to determine procedures on new assignments and provide guidance to others 
  • Demonstrated ability to function well as a team member
  • High degree of creativity, vision, and resourcefulness
  • An awareness and understanding of environmental justice issues in low-income, urban communities
  • Ability to collaborate and negotiate with diverse groups and interests in dynamic inner-city environments
  • Budgeting and time management skills
  • Ability to train and mentor other project staff
  • Computer proficiency: AutoCAD, Adobe CS and Microsoft Office; SketchUp a plus
  • Fundraising and marketing skills a plus
  • Spanish language skills desirable
  • Non-profit experience desirable
  • Experience and/or interest in real estate and conducting land acquisitions
