Northern Rockies Director of Philanthropy

Position Summary:
The Trust for Public Land seeks a successful, driven fundraiser to lead all philanthropy activities for the organization’s Northern Rockies program, consisting of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. The Trust for Public Land creates parks and protects land for people, ensuring healthy, livable communities for generations to come. In the Northern Rockies, the “land for people” mission is improving community wellbeing through parks and “nature close to home” and expanding an 850,000-acre legacy of protected and publically accessible lands and waterways across the region.
The Northern Rockies Director of Philanthropy (DOP) raises $1 million+ annually in private funds to support the Northern Rockies program’s operating and programmatic needs. The DOP works closely with the Northern Rockies Director to shape programmatic vision and the philanthropy program, including developing and implementing a robust multi-year fundraising plan that demonstrates incremental growth and supports The Trust for Public Land’s annual operating and programmatic needs, principally in the Northern Rockies. As the lead fundraiser for the region, the position’s portfolio has a strong emphasis on individual major gift prospects and donors. In addition, the Director of Philanthropy helps recruit and manage the Northern Rockies Advisory Board and directs their fundraising efforts.
40%     Program and Advisory Board Oversight: Oversees and accountable for all fundraising activities in the Northern Rockies including the design and implementation of annual and long-range plans and priorities, setting and realization of annual revenue goals, and development of donor-centric marketing materials. With Northern Rockies Director’s partnership, guides philanthropic strategy to meet programmatic goals and operating and capital needs, including philanthropic campaigns. Shares responsibility with the Northern Rockies Director for meeting or exceeding the annual philanthropy budget. Monitors philanthropy associated expenses ensuring proper investment of resources. Oversees donor communications and recognition, coordinating with regional and national marketing departments.  Leads and implements strategic donor events and tours. Directs and coordinates the involvement of leadership and program staff with donors and in overall fundraising. Collaborates with Legal, Finance, Marketing, and Donor Services staff as necessary.
Collaborates with Northern Rockies Director and Advisory Board Chair to identify, recruit, cultivate, and retain Advisory Board members, fostering an environment for continued programmatic and philanthropic success. Leads philanthropy-related board activities, including 100% advisory board giving at the Conservation Champion level, philanthropic outreach, and donor cultivation events.
50%     Relationship Manager: Manages a portfolio of approximately 100 donors and prospects with an emphasis on individual major gift donors and prospects, including: donor identification, strategy development, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Conducts donor visits regularly and often to achieve at least 100 visits annually. Makes solicitations and closes gifts; promotes planned giving. Writes solicitation letters and proposals, as well as stewardship reports. Tracks and meets deadlines. Engages other staff and volunteers in fundraising efforts.
10%     Management: Supports the success of the Northern Rockies Philanthropy Coordinator through clear communication, guidance and management to keep donor records updated in the donor database; generate gift acknowledgements, donor reports and research; facilitate gift processing; and support volunteer engagement and events. Supports professional development opportunities. Monitors progress and provides positive and constructive feedback.  Delivers annual performance assessment.
 Experience, Education and Skills Required:
  • Minimum six years of fundraising experience, including major gift solicitations and campaign management.
  • Demonstrated experience recruiting and managing volunteer boards and/or campaign committees, as well as working with volunteers in fundraising.
  • Knowledge, experience and contacts in the Northern Rockies philanthropic communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as a member of a team, ensuring close coordination and integration with other staff members.
  • Self-motivated with a proven ability to work autonomously; able to multi-task with exceptional organizational and planning skills and excellent attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Excellent written communication skills (including grant writing) and interpersonal skills ranging from one-on-one interactions to formal group presentations.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and able to thrive in a small, dynamic, busy office.
  • Computer proficiency with various Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and with complex databases or donor management software a plus.
  • Ensures ethical compliance with fundraising best practices, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.

  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and available for donor related travel (avg of 30%) mostly within the region and some national.
