Northern California-Interior Conservation Director

Position Summary:


The NorCal-Interior Conservation Director will lead TPL’s conservation work in the Sierra Nevada, Central Valley and Southern Cascades, as part of a statewide land conservation team of twelve core members.  The position requires a seasoned leader with demonstrated experience in developing and implementing a strategic approach to landscape-scale conservation, cultivating diverse partnerships, and preserving priority open space lands and waters in urban and rural environments utilizing nonprofit land acquisition techniques.  Familiarity with the full range of protection tools, including land acquisition, easement development, and property donation is required.  In addition, successful completion of cooperative projects with nonprofit and tribal partners as well as federal, state and local governments is essential. This position also works closely with TPL’s philanthropy team, and manages TPL’s NorCal-Interior project team. This management position advances national and state climate-resilient, equity-based land conservation strategies as well as local program priorities through the successful completion of a region-wide conservation agenda coupled with complex real estate transactions.  S/he also assists the CA State Director, CA Land Conservation Director, and the NorCal-Coastal and SoCal Conservation Directors with strategic planning, program development, budgeting, and fundraising.
 
Essential Functions:

  • Program Development
    • Participates as a leader in staff meetings, strategic planning sessions, program budget preparation, development and fundraising efforts and project strategy discussions.
    • Builds a programmatic approach to climate-resilient, landscape-scale conservation across the region.
    •  Helps lead development of federal, state, and local public funding and other funding sources for ongoing work across the region.
    • Researches, develops, and pursues potential acquisition opportunities, within existing programmatic areas consistent with TPL priorities.
    • In collaboration with the CA Land Conservation team, creates, oversees, manages and monitors the financial support associated with protection projects.
  • Staff Management
    • Supervises 1-2 land protection staff working toward accomplishment of organizational strategies with responsibility for performance management, training and career development. 
    • Assures timely completion and submission of materials related to administrative duties and internal real estate approvals, including term sheets and fact sheets.
  • Real Estate Project Management
    • Independently manages land acquisition projects by overseeing all aspects of the acquisition and conveyance of property and property rights, including: negotiate purchase agreements, contract for and review appraisals and environmental assessments; assist with legal document preparation; manage public review processes; organize grassroots political lobbying and fundraising; complete internal fact sheets, memos and other approval documents/procedures, maps and photos; and related administrative tasks. Works professionally with and is responsive to TPL’s Legal staff, internal Project Review Committee (PRC) and Transaction Committee (TransCom).
  • Philanthropy
    • Collaborates with CA State Director, Philanthropy staff and land protection team members to help raise annual operating support for local programs.
    • Cultivates potential donors and assists, as needed, with developing and maintaining productive relationships with California Advisory Board members and other volunteers.
    • Articulates fundraising needs, makes presentations to donors and foundations.
  • Assists in the overall public relations effort by advancing and promoting TPL’s excellent reputation with public agencies, conservation organizations, elected officials and the general public.  Responsible for ensuring TPL acquisitions are structured to meet high standards of integrity and receive favorable press coverage and philanthropic support.
  • Maintains current awareness of land conservation techniques and land use issues by reading periodicals and other related documents, attending public forums and identifying and participating in training opportunities.
  • Works in collaboration with other members of the CA Land Conservation team to coach new staff members, collaborate on projects, develop best practices, provide team support, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree required.  Advanced degree in resources management, conservation, business, law, or another related field preferred.
  • Requires 5-8 years of relevant experience.
  • Supervisory experience preferred, willingness to develop and improve management skills required.
  • This position requires moderate to heavy travel, as well as periodic evening or weekend duties.

  • Expert knowledge of real estate due diligence process and government real property acquisition review process.
  • High-level familiarity with public agency land acquisition departments.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the processes for obtaining public funding for land acquisition.
  • Ability to manage multiple, complex projects, multiple funding sources and processes, develop programs and use the organization’s resources to accomplish larger initiatives.
  • Has existing relationships with public agencies and government officials.
  • Has existing relationships with philanthropic foundations and individual donor prospects.
  • Has high-level familiarity with topics such as climate change, park equity and tribal engagement.
