Director of Planned Giving

Position Summary:  The Director of Planned Giving (DPG) leads The Trust for Public Land’s Planned Giving program and is responsible for the growth over time of the planned giving donor pipeline. The DPG and his/her team work toward ambitious annual goals for new planned gifts, planned giving leads and donor visits.
 
Reporting to the Vice President for Philanthropy Programs, the DPG:
  • manages a portfolio of high level planned giving prospects and confirmed planned giving donors
  • manages the work of an Assistant Director of Planned Giving and a Planned Giving Manager
  • works collaboratively with Philanthropy staff across the organization to cultivate, solicit and secure planned gifts
  • directs planned giving marketing for The Trust for Public Land
  • serves as a member of The Trust for Public Land’s Senior Philanthropy Operations Team which sets and leads the organization’s philanthropy strategy
  • works collaboratively with The Trust for Public Land’s Finance Department to administer planned gifts and to report on the Planned Giving program
  • serves as a resource to donors, prospects, Philanthropy staff and the Legal Team for issues relating to planned giving in particular and philanthropy in general.
 
The DPG will be responsible for negotiating and closing a wide range of planned giving arrangements including, but not limited to, bequests, charitable remainder trusts, testamentary trusts, charitable gift annuities, and retained life estates as well as advising on other complex gifts to The Trust for Public Land.  The DPG will also be responsible for the overall management of the planned giving program, for organizational policies related to planned giving, and for the program’s internal and external marketing strategies.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Donor Engagement
  • Manages and solicits a portfolio of top planned giving donors and prospects.
  • Follows up on planned giving leads and conducts outreach to prospects alongside the other members of the planned giving team.
  • Provides support to the Trust for Public Land’s fundraisers in identifying and qualifying planned giving prospects within their portfolios, collaborates on solicitation strategies.
Marketing
  • Oversees the external marketing of planned giving to the Trust for Public Land’s constituents
  • Responsible for success of maintaining and building the base of planned giving donors through direct mail and digital marketing efforts. 
  • Manages relationship with and work of an external planned giving marketing consultant
  • Collaborates with Marketing team, Annual Fund team and others as needed to promote planned giving messaging in Trust for Public Land communications.
 Managing the Planned Giving Team
  • Directs the work of the Assistant Director Planned Giving and the Planned Giving Manager with an emphasis on collaboration, both within the Planned Giving group and across the organization.
  • Creates the annual plan for Planned Giving, in collaboration with the DPP.
  • Manages the Planned Giving Department’s budget
 Philanthropy Leadership
  • The DPG is a member of the Senior Philanthropy Operations Team that supports the CPO and the DPP in annual planning, campaign planning & strategy, budgeting, goal setting, policy development and departmental administration.
Stewardship of Stegner Society members
  • Leads the planning giving team’s collaboration with Donor Stewardship around Stegner Society events
  • Coordinates Planned Giving’s annual stewardship activities.
 Track Outside Trusts and Estates
  • In collaboration with the planned giving team and The Trust for Public Land’s Finance department, monitors outside trusts and estates, taking action as needed to ensure that gifts are received in a timely manner. 
Training
  • In collaboration with the planned giving team, coordinates planned giving training for Trust for Public Land staff, including New Hire Orientation, training opportunities at staff retreats, and other internal presentations as needed.
  • Coordinates the orientation of volunteers on planned giving.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Interest in all aspects of the mission of The Trust for Public Land and a dedication to promoting fundraising priorities through developing excellent working relationships with staff, donors, volunteer leaders, and the Philanthropy team.
  • Ability to see and understand the objectives of the Philanthropy program, and to integrate the planned giving program with those objectives.
  • Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and alter strategic advancement plans.
  • Demonstrated senior level administrative experience in a complex, decentralized environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate, solicit and secure philanthropic gifts from a variety of donors.
  • Proven fundraising, leadership and consensus building abilities.
  • Minimum 10 years philanthropy experience, with at least 5 years focused primarily on planned giving.
  • Thorough knowledge of planned and life income gift opportunities, gift and estate tax regulations, the principles of direct mail campaign strategies, and major gift fundraising.
  • Ability to think strategically to successfully negotiate with individuals and groups, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to work effectively with professional advisors in the legal, financial, and tax fields.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities, complex gift scenarios and tight deadlines.
  • Superior written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient with philanthropy CRM, planned giving software.
  • Ability to lead, work in a team setting, and work independently.
  • Comfort in researching and analyzing large groups of data to uncover planned giving prospects.
  • J.D. degree or equivalent strongly preferred.
  • Willingness to travel as needed for donor work and for collaboration across the organization (approx. 25%).
