Community Outreach Associate

The Community Outreach Associate connects the public to The Trust for Public Land’s work in Newark, New Jersey. The Associate promotes the mission of The Trust for Public Land with residents and local community groups and is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders.  Working closely with the Community Outreach Coordinator and Program Manager, the Community Outreach Associate will be responsible to plan and organize events, recruit volunteers, and arrange other projects to get the community excited about and invested in the projects that support The Trust for Public Land’s mission.  The successful candidate will also be responsible for establishing, maintaining, and deepening our relationship with schools and community organizations in order to provide our volunteers with the connections and resources they need to support our long-standing Parks for People program in Newark and the many playgrounds and parks that we have created across the city. The position will also support the Program Manager, who is responsible for managing the design and construction of our park projects. 
Qualifications and Core Skills:
  • Ability to build and leverage relationships with city government, the school district, other non-profits, grassroots groups, and community groups as well as internally within the organization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong communication skills with awareness of web content, social media, traditional media, and listservs
  • Ability to work flexibly managing multiple responsibilities and deadlines
  • Ability to work directly with diverse communities and youth
  • Attention to detail with strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks but be flexible depending on program/organization needs
  • A high degree of personal initiative with the desire and ability to set and meet aggressive strategic goals
  • Must be able to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Must be flexible to work some evenings and weekends as many community meetings and gathering happen outside of 9 to 5 work hours.
  • College degree is a plus
  • Computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software
  • Volunteer experience (as a volunteer or managing volunteers) is a plus
  • Familiarity with and/or residency in Newark, New Jersey is a plus
