Scott Property, Harstine Island

For more than 15 years, Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission eyed the Scott property, 112 pristine acres of land on the east shore of Harstine Island, as the site for a potential new park location.

When the land was slated for a 15-lot housing development, TPL stepped in to help purchase the land, which encompasses a rich variety of habitats, including a densely forested upland area, creeks, wetlands, and shoreline. With the project completed in late 2010, now the property will be open to the public as a state park with trails and day use facilities.

Visitors can discover a woodland rich in native animals and birds, with streams feeding into healthy wetlands that buffer a half mile of shoreline. From here, visitors can watch orcas, seals, and sea lions play and feed in the waters, or they can turn north to explore two miles of public tidelands.  The new park also gives pedestrian access to McMicken Island State Park, a long-time favorite boating destination, by way of a tombolo - a sand spit only visible during low tide.
