Maho Bay Camps, St. John

Among the most highly praised ecotourism destinations in the world, this beautiful 14-acre property has a 300-foot white sandy beach and 114 rustic tent-cottages hidden on a forested hillside, connected by a network of wooden platforms, boardwalks and stairways. For more than 30 years, earth-conscious visitors have enjoyed natural, open-air vacations in these tropical tree-houses. Surrounding the camp are shady hiking trails including walks to historic plantation ruins.

Operated since 1976, this beloved ecotourism destination is now under threat. The campground operator's lease is scheduled to expire in 2012, and the property owners have put the land up for sale. The Trust for Public Land is working to preserve Maho Bay Camps as a natural, undeveloped campground that will continue to offer affordable vacations and sustain St. John's distinctive ecotourism character.
