Purgatory Creek flows into the San Marcos River and is a vital component of the local watershed. The southern portion of beautiful and rapidly growing Hays County lies directly over the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone, which is a vital source of drinking water for Central Texans. The limestone hills of this portion of the Edwards Plateau support open savannas and dense woodlands of oak, juniper, and mesquite, and is home to the endangered golden-cheeked warbler, black-capped vireo, and many other rare and endemic species. In 2003, the city of San Marcos acquired the Purgatory Creek Natural Area (PCNA) which remains a favorite destination for hikers and naturalists. Right now, TPL has an opportunity to expand the PCNA by 289-acres, protecting the wildlife and water quality that is vulnerable to local development pressure. The threat near the City of San Marcos, which has experienced exponential growth in recent years, is particularly intense, while Hays is one of the fastest-growing counties in Texas. The Trust for Public Land, the City of San Marcos, and Hays County are partnering to acquire and conserve this parcel and its rich resources for future generations.
