Government Canyon Natural Area

Northwest of San Antonio is a rolling, rugged former ranch that lies directly over the Edwards Aquifer, prime source of the city's drinking water. For years, development plans for the property came and went, until in the 1980s it fell into ownership of the Resolution Trust Corporation, formed to dispose of properties owned by failed savings and loan institutions. Quickly a partnership of citizens groups and public water and wildlife agencies launched an effort to permanently protect the land. TPL helped facilitate the acquisition of 4717 acres by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1993, adding it to the Government Canyon State Natural Area, where TPL has conducted a series of transactions that have added more than 6,000 acres, protecting significant habitat for endangered species and providing a much-loved recreation destination for area residents.
