South Carolina

One of the last undeveloped barrier islands in South Carolina, Morris Island witnessed the opening shots of the American Civil War. The Trust for Public Land helped to permanently protect this heritage site—which also serves as critical habitat for shorebirds. In fast-growing Beaufort County, TPL has assisted city and community leaders in conserving more than 15,000 acres of farmland, forests, shoreline, and historic places. TPL has also led the effort to expand Congaree National Park, the nation’s largest intact tract of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest.
