Since 1999, The Trust for Public Land has worked in partnership with island families, public agencies, and local nonprofit groups to protect some of Puerto Rico’s most ecologically and historically significant forests, beaches, and watersheds. TPL protected more than 1,400 acres at the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge and has worked to create and protect the San Miguel Natural Reserve, cornerstone of Puerto Rico’s Northeast Ecological Corridor.
Since 2007, TPL has acquired more than 400 acres at San Miguel—working with a conservation-minded landowner and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources to ensure the permanent protection of this significant site. Through this work, we are conserving the rainforest watershed and preserving critical habitat for turtles, parrots, migratory birds, and other species.
