Marks Creek Riverwalk

In late 2008, TPL worked with the Triangle Land Conservancy to purchase Riverwalk, permanently protected a 329-acre property at the juncture of the Neuse River and Marks Creek. This unspoiled rural area which was deemed a "Last Chance Landscape" by Scenic America spans the two watersheds, which have long been priority conservation areas for clean water, greenway and park advocates. The Neuse River is also the proposed corridor for the state's Mountains-to-Sea Trail, while its tributaries and hundreds of undeveloped acres are ideal for a network of parks and greenways in a rapidly urbanizing area with a shortage of parks.

Preserving this parcel will ensure the area retains the distinct rural character consistent with its 270 year old farming heritage, and the acquisition is an important step towards the long term goal of conserving 7,500 acres of open space in the Marks Creek Watershed.

 Funding came from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund and the North Carolina Clean Water Trust Fund.
