New Jersey's Green Acres Program

New Jersey's Green Acres Program, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2011, is among the most successful state preservation programs in the nation. Since 1961, Green Acres has preserved more than 650,000 acres of land and supported the development of more than 1,100 state and local parks.

Green Acres has enjoyed consistent support from New Jersey voters, who have approved 13 statewide ballot measures to fund the program since its inception. In 1998, voters approved the Garden State Preservation Trust Act, providing ten years of stable funding to the program. After funds from the Garden State Preservation Trust were depleted, voters approved another $600 million in bond measures in 2007 and 2009 to continue Green Acres, farmland and historic preservation efforts. The Trust for Public Land played a leading role in securing approval of these funds.
