Isinglass River
Credit: Jerry and Marcy Monkman
The 18-mile long Isinglass River flows through relatively intact forestland in rapidly developing southeastern New Hampshire. Protecting the river's water quality-the river serves as the drinking water source for the Town of Strafford-and fishery has been a top priority of local officials and residents. So when 287 acres containing 7,800 feet of frontage along the river were slated for a 70-lot subdivision, local residents took action.
In 2008, together with Town of Strafford and Bear-Paw Regional Greenways, The Trust for Public Land acquired the property with funding from the federal Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program. TPL's acquisition prompted additional landowner donations that increased the area conserved threefold.
