Mount Sentinel, Montana

Providing a prominent backdrop to the city of Missoula, between Pattee Canyon and Hellgate Canyon, Mount Sentinel is a spectacular oasis of rolling grasslands and coniferous forests that supports abundant wildlife. Close to the university neighborhoods in this growing community, the area provides outstanding access to nearby public lands. In partnership with the City, local Five Valleys Land Trust, and community leaders, TPL protected a 475-acre parcel on the south slope of the mountain. A popular public trail runs along the northwestern boundary of the property, and much of the adjacent lands are already available to the public. Protecting this magnificent property consolidated publicly owned land and created a new link to the Pattee Canyon Recreation Area.
