Prickett Lake
Credit: TPL Archives
Bordering the Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness Area, Prickett Lake is where the North Country National Scenic Trail crosses the Sturgeon Wild and Scenic River, and had long been a priority for the Ottawa National Forest when the privately owned property was put on the market, threatening the wild lands with private recreational development. TPL helped negotiate an agreement to acquire more than 1,200 acres around Prickett Lake in two phases for addition to the Ottawa National Forest. In 2010, the first transaction acquired roughly 660 acres using $1,500,000 from the Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. With 2011 LWCF funding, the remaining acres should be added to the national forest in fall 2011.
