Grand Island, Michigan

Native American legends about Lake Superior's Grand Island were incorporated into Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1855 poem Hiawatha. The 13,000-acre island includes forests, white beaches, sandstone cliffs, a 150-year-old cedar swamp, as well as Echo Lake--at one square mile, believed to be the world's largest beaver-formed lake. The island borders both Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the Hiawatha National Forest. TPL acquired the land for the U.S. Forest Service in 1990.
