The Northwoods of the upper Midwest is a distinct landscape with a rich history. Once a vast highway for Native American and French fur traders, the wild forests and rivers have long been central to the region’s economy and culture. The Trust for Public Land is working with landowners, communities, and public agencies to conserve this unique landscape, including more than 30,000 acres on Michigan’s upper peninsula. Key sites include the Sturgeon River Gorge, where TPL has helped to convey critical wildlife habitat to the U.S. Forest Service.
