Patuxent River

In October, 2006 The Trust for Public Land protected 318 waterfront acres along the Patuxent River, just 12 miles from Washington, D.C. This property, once under contract for development, was the largest single parcel still available for conservation on the river. It provides public access to trails that are part of the Patuxent River Scenic Trail, a system ultimately envisioned as a 60-mile trail along the entire eastern border of Prince George's County. This property is an important link, providing a southern trailhead for walkers, bikers, birders, equestrians, and other outdoor enthusiasts. In a region ripe with growth, the land's forests and fields provide a critical buffer that keeps intact the natural filtration system protecting the waters of the Patuxent and other tributaries that flow into the Chesapeake Bay.
