Westport Island, Maine

For most of its history, Westport Island was home to a rural community of small farms. But with community agriculture on the wane, the island's seclusion and rustic charm has proven attractive to seasonal home-buyers and much of the land has been sold for development. The Trust for Public Land is working to help purchase just over 200 acres of forest, ponds, and wetlands in the heart of this community. Protecting this land will ensure that residents and visitors can continue to enjoy recreational access for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

Conserving this area will also preserve coastal access to the lower Sheepscot River, support ongoing efforts to safeguard drinking water, and protect important coastal habitat for many species of waterfowl and wading birds in the Sheepscot and Kennebec estuaries.
