Smart Cities–New Orleans
Credit: Andy Isaacson
As New Orleans rebuilds in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, TPL is working in local neighborhoods to help residents create more parks and protected lands which they can enjoy. Building "smart cities" includes creating places for people to get outside and enjoy nature–even in the midst of crowded neighborhoods. One key to a greener, greater New Orleans is the Lafitte Greenway, a planned 3.1 mile park stretching from the Lakeview area to the French Quarter, and passing through some of the city's most venerable neighborhoods, such as the Treme and Mid-City. As part of the Lafitte project, TPL is protecting an 18-acre parcel, which will be New Orleans' first new park in more than 20 years.
