In Kansas, The Trust for Public Land has conserved heritage sites that enshrine defining moments in American history. Nearly sold at auction in 1990, The Monroe School, central in the Brown v. Board of Education decision, is now an interpretive center on the struggle for civil rights. TPL has also protected the Mahaffie farmstead land along the Old Santa Fe Trail, preserving the route's only known stagecoach stop from encroaching commercial development.
