Parks for People-Chicago focuses on creating and adding more parkland and green space in Chicago's underserved urban neighborhoods. Working with the Chicago Park District, the Department of Planning and Development, and local neighborhood organizations, TPL is helping to expand and create new neighborhood parks and assist the city as it creates a major open space reserve near Lake Calumet.
A signature project, The 606, is an ambitious collaboration between The Trust for Public Land and several partners to create a trail and linear park system running through four densely populated Chicago neighborhoods on the city's Northwest side. The project includes the nearly 3-mile elevated Bloomingdale Trail and five ground-level parks. When complete, The 606 will also feature an observatory, skate park, education programs and artistic elements embedded throughout. Basic elements of The 606 are slated to be open by Fall 2014.
