On Chicago’s Northwest Side, a 2.7-mile stretch of abandoned, elevated railroad track is becoming The Bloomingdale Park and Trail—a place to stroll, play, and experience nature. The project highlights the difference that can be made when community partners, volunteers, and philanthropists work together.

The project, which began in 2008, will convert a remnant of Chicago’s industrial past, along Bloomingdale Avenue, into a multi-use trail and linear park. Plans include rehabilitation or replacement of 38 viaducts and the creation of at least six street level parks that reflect the culture and history of a diverse collection of neighborhoods, all in need of more park space.

As lead partner, we're involved with all aspects of the project: acquiring land, raising funds, overseeing community participation and design competitions, and coordinating the efforts of other organizations and agencies.
