Sawnee Mountain

In 1994, a rural landowner in rapidly developing Forsyth County came to TPL with a vision to protect the Sawnee Mountain ridgeline as one of the largest open spaces in Metropolitan Atlanta. The heavily wooded property with dramatic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains is nearly three times the size of Atlanta's Piedmont Park.
Today people enjoy instructional classes in rock climbing, rappelling, and backpacking as well as environmental education programs in birding, botany and natural awareness. TPL established an independent, nonprofit corporation that works with the county to guide development of the new regional park, covering more than 800 acres.
