The Trust for Public Land has been helping the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service expand Bond Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, along the Ocmulgee River south of Macon. TPL has added more than 1,500 acres to the refuge—more then 580 acres in the last year alone.

One of the state's premiere stopping spots for migratory ducks and other waterfowl, the refuge is also home to bald eagles, wood storks, black bears, and alligators.  And as a planned link in Macon's Ocmulgee Heritage Greenway, the refuge will increasingly welcome human visitors.

This refuge is an important link in the proposed Ocmulgee Heritage Greenway, an integrated system of scenic, historic and recreational resources along the Ocmulgee River. The refuge has 6,500 acres of diverse habitat ranging from mixed hardwood ridges to bottomland hardwood swamp forests, creeks and beaver swamps, and oxbow lakes and wetlands.

Bond Swamp is located along the Ocmulgee River in Bibb and Twiggs counties, Georgia, approximately six miles south of the city of Macon. You can get to the Refuge by taking I-75 to I-16 East to Exit 6, Route 23/129 South and heading south. For more information, visit the Bond Swamp National Wildlife Refuge website.
