Everglades

As the largest wilderness east of the Mississippi, the Everglades is one of the world’s most impressive and important outdoor havens. This place is home to multitudes of unique plant and animal species, including the last remaining Florida panthers, endangered American crocodiles, and invasive Burmese pythons.

The Everglades spans 1.5 million acres across Florida, but at one time the territory was 3 million acres. Draining wetlands, paired with development and agricultural use, has diminished the Everglades for years. But Trust for Public Land, along with countless other organizations, is working to protect this place for generations to come. TPL has helped to add 48,000 acres to Everglades National Park and is focused on further expansion in the years ahead. Less than one third is currently under public protection.

In addition to the benefits that the Everglades provides for plant and animal species, it is a recreational staple in the American fabric. Alongside passionate recreationists, local governments, and like-minded organizations, the fight to protect the Everglades is ongoing and essential.
