The Ethel Walker Woods in Simsbury—a 427-acre mosaic of forest, fields, and wetlands—has been a conservation priority for both the town and the State for many years. In July 2007, TPL, in conjunction with partners and volunteers, permanently protected 335 acres of the Walker Woods. Protection of this land safeguards local drinking water supplies, preserves valuable wildlife habitat, and connects parks, town forests, the Farmington River Greenway, and thousands of acres of a north-south corridor stretching to Massachusetts, all part of the Connecticut River watershed. This project demonstrates TPL's Community Open Space focus, with the town contributing over $6 million to a nearly $10 million pricetag because of the tremendous importance of this last large open space to the identity of a densely populated municipality near Hartford.
