Until recently, West Oakland's Bertha Port Park featured only a quarter-acre sandy lot, a single tree, and a forlorn blue statue of a dolphin. Upset that Head Start preschoolers had no better place to play, local resident Marilyn Reynolds began advocating for the city-owned park's renovation. TPL's Parks for People - Bay Area Program initiated community outreach and design, helped raise funds, and oversaw the redevelopment of the park, which now offers a new play structure, benches, picnic table, water feature, trees, and a lawn. Completing the transformation, mosaic artist Laurel True covered the dolphin with colorful tiles, giving the much-loved statue a fresh new look.
