Hillside Natural Area
Credit: Gary Hill
These 8 acres on a steep hillside in El Cerrito was once eyed for a residential development, but when the plan stalled, the land became a regular stop for hikers, joggers, mountain bikers, and dog walkers. When the community learned that the property was going on the market, they approached The Trust for Public Land. We negotiated a reduced sale price and an agreement to buy and hold the land until December 2014, while the local community raises enough money through grants, donations and park bond funds. The Hillside Natural Area will link two existing city parks, creating 90 acres of green space in the crowded East Bay hills. Once the land is transferred to the city, volunteers will build and maintain the trails and remove trash and invasive plant species.
