Maywood Avenue Park
A third of an acre may not sound like much, but when it's the only open space for the 12,000 people living within one-half mile of the park, it's huge. That’s the size of the new park The Trust for Public Land is developing on Maywood Avenue, at the heart of California's most densely populated, and park-poor city, located on the edge of the LA River, and surrounded by heavy industrial areas.
To make sure that the locals got the park they really wanted, The Trust for Public Land team, in partnership with the City of Maywood, Union de Vecinos and Padres Unidos de Maywood reached out to the people living close by, holding five workshops where they could establish their priorities for this precious open space. The finished design is both eclectic and welcoming, with a mini sports field next to a shady plaza, and a playground with state-of-the-art equipment that overlooks a simple skateboard spot. Construction is due to start on Maywood Avenue Park in late summer 2013.
