Midland School

Since 1942, Midland students have enjoyed the open classrooms of the school's fields, forests, and gardens. For more than half a century, this biologically diverse landscape has been out of bounds for development. Adjacent to both the Sedgwick Reserve and the San Rafael Wilderness Area, the school's fields and oak-dotted hillsides have offered refuge for plants and wildlife such as black bears, bobcats, and coyotes. In 2006, Midland became concerned about encroaching development. Working with TPL and the Land Trust of Santa Barbara County, the school protected the land with a conservation easement that will permanently prevent development of one of the largest, continuous wildlife corridors in the region.
