Situated in the picturesque Alaska Peninsula National Wildlife Refuge and Aniakchak National Preserve, 68,000 acres of subsurface oil and gas rights sat in the Yantarni Bay. Private ownership of these oil and gas rights had left the refuge and preserve vulnerable to possible extraction of energy sources. In 1996, thanks to the generosity of a private donor, TPL was able to purchase the oil and gas rights and convey them to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, eliminating the threat of future mining activity within the refuge.
