Natural Landscapes Absorb Carbon

All natural landscapes—in particular, forests—absorb and store the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide as they grow. According to current estimates, natural landscapes absorb 14% of annual U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, a percentage that could be doubled through conservation. TPL's Climate Mitigation initiative conserves forests, farms, grassland and wetlands, preventing deforestation and planting and replanting forests as a way to increase the absorption of greenhouse gasses.

Preserving Forests Secures Climate Benefit

Based on 35 years of experience protecting large natural landscapes, TPL works with government agencies, landowner groups, and private investors to promote land conservation and carbon sequestration management strategies, including those that are eligible for credits under government-mandated greenhouse gas reduction systems.
