The region of Maryland west of Chesapeake Bay is rich in rivers. The Gunpowder, Gwynns Falls, Patuxent, Patapsco, and Potomac Rivers all thread the rapidly growing region, which includes both Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. Nearly 1.5 million people live within a mile of the bay shore, of one of the rivers, or of the rivers' tributary streams. These shores are a natural magnet for recreation in a region where population is expected to grow by 25 percent by 2030,
