SITE HISTORY: Former site of a chemical blending plant. The 1.14 acres will ultimately be part of a five-acre park in the city of Maywood, Los Angeles County. The proposed city park borders a residential neighborhood.
CONTAMINATION: Soil contamination and 29 USTs.
REMEDIATION: EPA is removing the above-ground and underground storage tanks and removing the contaminated soil from the site.
PARTIES: EPA/City of Maywood/California Center for Land Recycling/State of California/Trust for Public Land (site acquisition)/Mountain Recreation and Conservation Authority/Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy
PLAN/DRIVER: Los Angeles River Greenway Plan and the community's need for green space.
FUNDING: Seeking $2.1M for acquisition and $1.2M for development through state and Proposition A grants; $900K match from SMMC; $500K in other state funding.
END USE/MANAGER: The park will be maintained as green space, eventually to contain a vocational training center, river-trail-related businesses, and a soccer field. The city of Maywood will manage the park.
